2021-O Morgan Silver Dollar 100th Anniversary

Celebrate the centennial of an American numismatic icon with the 2021-O Morgan Silver Dollar 100th Anniversary. Released by the United States Mint to commemorate 100 years since the final year of the original Morgan Dollar series in 1921, this special anniversary issue revives George T. Morgan’s legendary design in modern .999 fine silver. Its distinctive “O” privy mark pays tribute to the historic New Orleans Mint and its important connection to the original Morgan Dollar series.

The classic Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878 and struck through 1904 before returning for one final year in 1921. The New Orleans Mint produced Morgan Dollars from 1879 through 1904, making the “O” mark a familiar and historically significant feature within the series. Because the New Orleans facility was no longer an operating U.S. Mint facility in 2021, the anniversary coin was actually struck at Philadelphia and uses a special “O” privy mark to honor its New Orleans heritage.

Classic George T. Morgan Design with “O” Privy Mark

The obverse showcases George T. Morgan’s famous left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a cap adorned with agricultural elements and a crown bearing the word LIBERTY. The inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM, 13 stars and the date 2021 surround the portrait, recreating the distinctive imagery that has made the Morgan Dollar one of the most recognizable coins in American history.

The reverse features a heraldic American eagle with outstretched wings, holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons and surrounded by a wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST and ONE DOLLAR complete the design. Below the wreath is the special “O” privy mark, presented within a raised oval with the letter “O” incused into its surface as a tribute to the former New Orleans Mint.

.999 Fine Silver in Original Government Packaging

Unlike the original Morgan Dollars, which were composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, the 2021 anniversary edition was struck in .999 fine silver with an Uncirculated finish. Five different Morgan Dollar versions were produced for the 2021 centennial program, recognizing the historic Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans and Carson City facilities associated with the original series. The “O” and “CC” editions are particularly distinctive because they utilize privy marks rather than traditional mint marks.
